What are cockroaches?

There are several species of cockroaches that are common in the United States. American cockroaches, oriental cockroaches, and German cockroaches are the three most common types of cockroaches, and of those three, German cockroaches are the most common all over the world.

German roaches are light brown with six legs and a pair of long, thin antennae. They are about half an inch in length and have wings that they rarely use, preferring instead to run from place to place. German cockroaches like to live in warm, humid spaces close to food and water. They’ll eat just about anything with any nutritional value.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches do not bite, but that doesn’t stop them from being a serious threat to humans. These small pests are extremely dangerous to get in your house because of the many diseases they spread. From parasitic worms to over two dozen different types of bacteria, German cockroaches spread many disease-causing pathogens that can make you and your family sick.

The problem with cockroaches doesn’t end there. German cockroaches can also bother people with allergies and asthma. Studies have shown that the shed skin and saliva of German cockroaches can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms in some people.

Because of these issues, being on the lookout for signs of cockroaches in your home is essential. The sooner you identify an infestation, the smaller it will be and the faster it can be eliminated.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

If you find a cockroach in your house there is a very good chance that it is not the only one. Cockroaches are nocturnal, so they spend most of their time hidden away where you won’t notice them. Finding a cockroach in your house means you probably have a cockroach problem.

Why would cockroaches move into your house? They often come inside in search of a warm, humid area in which to settle. It’s also possible that they’ll come into your house to look for food or water. If they find what they’re looking for, whether that be food, water, or shelter, they’re likely to stick around.

Where will I find cockroaches?

Now that you know why and how cockroaches get in houses, it helps to know where you might find them in your house so you know where to look for them. Cockroaches like to hide in areas that are warm, humid, and near a water source. They can often be found under sinks in kitchens or bathrooms. Sometimes they’ll crawl into drains. Cockroaches can also often be found behind or under appliances.
